Special Education

The students with special needs at Grove Hill account for approximately ten percent of the population. Their special needs are met within the regular classroom setting and specially designed programs. All students with special needs are integrated into the school day as determined appropriate to foster positive social, emotional, and academic growth.

Grove Hill Early Childhood Special Education

Welcome to the Grove Hill Preschool for Children with Special Needs!

Our class is held for children aged two to five years, who are developmentally delayed. Our children may have difficulty with speech, movement, caring for themselves, or in getting along with others. Some of our children have medical problems or are physically disabled. Although our children are very different from one another, they are all alike in one way: "They will grow and learn."

In our program, a child's play is their work. This is where they develop coordination, initiate their own play, develop social skills and learn independence. Our center-based program uses developmentally appropriate guidelines and best practices to look at the total child. The child's parents are an important part of our program and planning for each child's development.

Regional Multi-disabilities Program

The regional program serves students with two or more severe disabilities from the counties of Page, Shenandoah, and Rockingham.  The program focuses on individual abilities and needs of students who are severely challenged.  An applied behavior analysis approach is used that encourages individual progress through positive reinforcement.

The program consists of the following staff: a special education teacher (endorsed in severe disabilities K - 12 with seven years teaching experience, and twelve years experience as a special education teaching assistant), two teaching assistants (both assistants are certified nursing assistants), and additional behavioral assistants as needed.  The school has a full time nurse (BSN) with pediatric experience.  Consulting services are available to the school through Commonwealth Autism Services.
