PAGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
For some children, kindergarten is the first time they leave their parents; others have gone to pre-school or baby-sitters. It is important that the first year in school provides children with a positive experience to ensure future success in school. The teachers feel that learning requires hands-on experiences. Field trips, math manipulatives, guest speakers, computers, and writing and illustrating class-made books give children hands-on experiences to stimulate learning.
First Grade Mrs. Julie Lee & Mrs. Pamela Snyder
The children come to first grade with such an eagerness to learn! The
year is very busy with learning skills in the subject areas and learning
to work together, share ideas, respect one another, and learn from each
other. If I could choose one word to describe first grade, it would be
"involvement". First graders learn by doing. Throughout the year, the children
are involved in hands-on activities, classroom and individual projects,
book-making, computers, field trips, etc. It is very rewarding to watch
the children grow from dependent to independent readers and writers!
Second Grade Mrs. Deena Bobbitt & Ms. Kristin Saunders
In second grade the students try out and perfect many reading skills. They continue to add to their vocabulary and comprehension skills. Social Studies, Science, and Health are more complex and include more activities. Math is more than learning facts now; it involves thinking through word problems.
Third Grade Ms. Nicole Haymore & Mrs. Cristy Wheelbarger
Third grade is the beginning transitional phase from primary to middle school. Although basal math and reading programs are utilized, many "hands-on" projects, stories, and guest speakers and/or presentations are incorporated. Academic highlights for the students include cursive handwriting, story writing and skills practice on the computer, use of multiplication and division, and applied grammar. Ancient civilizations, explorers, and economics are all covered in the social studies field. Science topics include investigating animal behavior, matter, energy resources, earth-space relationships and simple machines.
Fourth Grade Ms. Chantel Hensley
Fourth Grade is a big
transition year for many students. It is an adjustment from early childhood
years approaching the middle school years. Students' growth during this
school year is tremendous. They begin to adapt to more individual work, and more
responsibilities to help them prepare for middle school. This
year is a challenging year for most, but prepares them well for the future.
